Steven Mitchell

Steven Mitchell is the rehearsal pianist for the ballet department at the Metropolitan Opera.  He brings with him 30 years of experience in dance accompaniment.  He holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Houghton College (Houghton, NY) and a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy from Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX).


From 1992-1996 he was both Music Coordinator and Staff Pianist for Boston Ballet Center for Dance Education, and another 2 years solely as staff pianist.  While there he performed as soloist and with Boston Ballet Orchestra.  From 2000-2002 he held the position of Company Pianist for Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and held the keyboard chair with the Pittsburgh Ballet Orchestra from 2000-2004.  Steven was rehearsal pianist for Dutch National Ballet (Amsterdam, NL) during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.


In New York City Steven is affiliated with School of American Ballet, New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theater, and is on the advisory board of Regional Dance America.


Outside of ballet and opera, Steven has worked in film (Center Stage), has had works licensed for the big screen (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Cherry Blossoms, et al) and also the small screen (Flesh and Bone).
